Conversational Past

Regular verbs. Germans use the conversational past, or Perfekt, in spoken communication. It consists of a conjugated helping verb (haben or sein) and a past participle. All regular verbs form the participle in the same way (ge  + verb stem + t):

ich habe gesagt
du hast gesagt
er hat gesagt
wir haben gesagt
ihr habt gesagt
Sie, sie haben gesagt.

Most German verbs in the conversational past use the helping verb haben as sagen above. Exceptions are those verbs that refer to a change of place (movement) or condition. These include words like walking, running, flying and falling (movement) as well as dying and becoming (change in condition) The latter use the helping verb sein instead:

ich bin gelaufen                 
du bist gerannt                     
er ist geflogen                 
wir sind gefallen               
ihr seid geworden                 
sie sind gestorben     
    
One exception to this rule is the verb bleiben (to stay). For some odd reason it uses sein (Wir sind hier geblieben.)

Irregular verbs. A small number of German verbs are irregular. They do not form their participle like regular verbs and must be learned by heart. All six verbs above are irregular. Below is a list of other irregular past participles that are frequently used in our chat conversations:

Verbs ending in -ieren. All verbs that end in -ieren (kommunizieren, servieren, sich interessieren etc.) form the participle by adding the ending -iert.

Wir haben kommuniziert.                   
Er hat den Wein serviert.

Past Tense odal Verbs

Modal verbs generally do not take an umlaut in the past tense. They also never change their vowel between the singular and plural conjugations as some modal verbs in the present tense (e.g: ich darf, wir dürfen). Below is a list of modal verbs in the past tense:

Ich musste meiner Freundin schreiben.                           
Wir wollten gestern chatten.

ich musste
du musstest
er, sie musste
wir mussten
ihr musstet
Sie, sie mussten

Past modals take the same endings as musste above and use these vowels in bold: ich wollte, du konntest, er durfte, wir sollten, ihr mochtet, sie mussten
